Cosmetic Dentistry vs. General Dentistry

Jacksonville Cosmetic Dentistry

This post from Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville highlights the differences between general and cosmetic dentistry.

General dentistry is about preventing and treating oral diseases such as cavities and gum disease. When a problem is diagnosed, like a cavity, a general dentist determines the best way to address it.

Cosmetic dentistry is a term for elective dental procedures that make a smile more attractive. Examples include teeth whitening and porcelain veneers.

Sometimes there is overlap, and sometimes terminology gets a different spin from one practice to the next. For example, one dentist might call a dental implant cosmetic, while another will call it general or restorative. It’s the same procedure, of course, and used for the same reasons.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we are a full-service practice meeting the needs of all our patients. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry, of course. Call our office to schedule your next cleaning and checkup today!

Danger Zone! 5 Signs Of Gum Disease

dental payment plans Jacksonville

Here is some essential news from Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville: gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss among adults. There is also evidence that it is connected to heart disease. Fortunately, gum disease is easy to treat if it is found in the early stages.

What warning signs should you be looking for?

  1. Gums that bleed often
  2. Gums that appear tender, swollen, or very red, or gums that have visible pus in between them when they are pushed
  3. Your bite changes or your teeth suddenly don’t seem to fit together
  4. Gums that are loosening from the teeth
  5. A bad taste in the mouth or chronic bad breath

We hope you are not experiencing any of these issues. If you are not removing plaque between your teeth, however, your gums are at risk. Brushing alone is not adequate—make sure you floss daily.

Regular check-ups are another essential weapon in the fight against gum disease.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want all our patients to enjoy healthy teeth and gums. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Have a buy schedule? We offer extended evening and Saturday hours. Call to schedule an appointment today.

Into The Thick Of It, The Skinny On Toothpaste

Pumpkin Center cosmetic dental and tooth implants

This article from Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville answers some common questions about toothpaste.

What kind of toothpaste should you use? There is no one-size-fits-all product on the market. One patient might be interested in a whitening toothpaste, and another may need something for sensitive teeth.

There are tons of toothpaste choices in any grocery store, from those aimed at children to so-called natural toothpastes. You want to make the best choice for your teeth, but it isn’t always easy to make up your mind.

What’s In Toothpaste? Different types of toothpastes have specific active ingredients that make them work. Fluoride is by far the most important thing to look for. But there are other ingredients; here are some of the more common ones.

  • Detergents. Sodium lauryl sulfate is not only in toothpaste, but in other personal care products like shampoo. Sometimes it’s called Sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate, and makes products foamy. Some people are sensitive to it, and some consumer advocacy groups say it can be hazardous. There are toothpastes that don’t have it.
  • Whiteners. The most common toothpaste whitener is hydrogen peroxide, but there are others, like polyphosphates. They do a modest job whitening teeth, but to get a really white smile, try professional whitening.
  • Desensitizers. Some people’s teeth are more sensitive to hot and cold foods than others. And some are more tactile-sensitive. Used on a regular basis, desensitizing toothpastes can be very effective, but ask us for a recommendation first.
  • Plaque fighters. A toothpaste ingredient called triclosan is believed to fight plaque and gum inflammation. While it seemed promising at first, more recent studies indicate triclosan may contribute to antibiotic resistance, and disrupt hormones and the immune system.

Always read labels when shopping for toothpaste, and make sure your selection has the American Dental Association label. If you see it, it means the ADA considers it safe and effective.

Don’t ever hestitate to ask us what might be best for your teeth. At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville we offer general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule a cleaning and checkup with us today!

Should You Worry About Dental X-rays?

Jacksonville cosmetic dental and tooth implants

During a checkup at Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we do a thorough inspection of your teeth and gums. But visual inspections can’t tell us everything we need to know, which is why we take x-rays.

For most patients, we update our x-rays once a year. They help us to make accurate diagnoses by showing what cannot be seen by the eye alone. Also known as radiographs, the images give us the total picture: not just inside your teeth, but the tip of the roots and the bone under the gums. Thanks to x-rays, we are able to identify and treat dental issues before they become more serious.

There are several types of x-rays:

  • Bite-Wing x-rays give us a picture of the upper and lower back teeth. We can see how they touch each other and see if there is any decay.
  • Panoramic x-rays give us the big picture: a view of the teeth, jaws and jaw joints, nasal area, and even the sinuses. These are especially useful if we think the patient may need orthodontics or a dental implant.
  • Occlusal x-rays show us the floor of the mouth, and the bite of the upper or lower jaw. They’re good for showing the development of children’s teeth, both the baby and permanent teeth.

X-rays use radiation, but are designed to minimize patient exposure. Patients only get negligible amounts, making them safe. The latest generations of x-rays reduce radiation even more. Still, we take the added safety measure of covering the patient with a heavy leaded apron and collar.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we are committed to providing our patients with the best possible dental care. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. We have extended evening and Saturday hours to fit any busy schedule. Call us to set up an appointment today!

A Youthful Smile At Any Age

implant dentures Jacksonville

A wise person once said that everyone wants a long life, but no one wants to get old. Yet it happens. While some challenges that come with aging can’t be avoided, others can. At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we help patients of all ages with their dental health issues.

Many dental problems common among retirees such as missing teeth, gum recession, tooth damage, and yellowed enamel, can be remedied.

Some people think losing their teeth as they age is inevitable. It isn’t. With a proper dental health routine at home and regular cleanings and checkups in our office (just like you’ve always done, we hope) your teeth can last a lifetime.

But the mouth does undergo changes as we age. The nerves in teeth may get smaller, to the point where teeth are not as sensitive to cavities and other issues. That means you may not feel as much tooth pain from a cavity as you once did. Regular checkups become that much more important.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want to see all our patients in for a cleaning and checkup twice a year. Dental health is important, no matter your age! Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today!

Are Floss Picks As Good As Regular Dental Floss?

are floss picks as good as regular floss? Jacksonville

Are floss picks as good as regular floss? While it’s better to floss with a floss pick than to not floss at all, it’s important to note that floss picks can only clean a part of the tooth’s surface. At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we recommend traditional floss or tape. Here’s why:

A floss pick holds just a small piece of floss stretched in a straight line. But teeth are rounded, with occasional irregularities. A straight segment of floss just won’t conform to the contours of the tooth as well as traditional, string floss.

By wrapping string floss completely around the circumference of a tooth, you can clean plaque off your teeth far more effectively. We have seen patients who are dutiful floss pick users who developed decay due to a small crack the floss pick missed day after day.

Here is a guide to proper flossing:

  • Cut a segment of floss about 18 inches long and securely wind each end around your middle fingers.
  • Take hold of the floss with your forefinger and thumb leaving about two inches to work with. Thread the floss between two teeth.
  • Hold the floss tightly against the side of the tooth and move it up and away from the gumline. You want to clean the space between the tooth and gum without pulling more gum tissue away, so it’s critical to scrape up and out of the pocket.
  • Move the floss around the tooth to clean every surface—especially those that your brush can’t reach. You can use a “shoeshine” method if you like. As you use a section of floss, unwind from one hand to access a clean piece. With 18 inches, you should have enough to furnish a clean segment for each tooth. If you run out, that’s okay. Just toss the used piece and cut a new piece.
  • Some people find it simpler to start on one end of the upper teeth and clean each gap one by one until they reach the end on the opposite side, and then repeat for the lower arch. Whatever method you opt for, make sure you clean around every tooth, including the back surfaces of the rear molars.

If you have never flossed before, your gums might bleed the first few times. The bleeding may be due to gum inflammation, the beginnings of gum disease. Keep flossing gently and the bleeding typically stops within a week or two.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want all our patients to enjoy excellent dental health. That means daily flossing and brushing, and a checkup in our office every six months. We offer general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule your next appointment today!

Unexpected Stress? Don’t Forget Your Smile

Jacksonville cosmetic dental and tooth implants

This message from Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville is about the stress we all face every day, and its impact on your dental health.

When you suddenly have to juggle extra balls, some are bound to get dropped. Maybe you are the caregiver for an ailing parent. Maybe you took on a second job, or started night school to earn an advanced degree.

Not every stressor is negative. A new baby, marriage, career, or move can be exciting but overwhelming. It’s okay – and sometimes helpful – to drop some of the balls. You can probably let another parent take over room mother duties for a few weeks, forego a haircut, or skip poker night until things calm down.

When life hands you extra challenges it is easy to get lax about oral hygiene. Sometimes you feel too exhausted to brush or floss and skip regular check-ups and cleanings. doctor Freedom Village Dental dentist wants to remind you to consider the possible consequences of neglecting your smile.

  1. Tooth decay
  2. Gum disease
  3. Tooth and gum pain
  4. Bad breath
  5. Infection
  6. Tooth loss

Your plate is already full – you don’t want to add poor oral health and the associated expense and inconvenience required to treat advanced issues.

Let the car go unwashed for a few weeks. Record your favorite show to watch later when things slow down. Postpone that kitchen remodel. But keep your smile healthy – it really will make your life easier, healthier, and happier.

Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville provides general and cosmetic dentistry, with extended evening and Saturday hours to fit any busy schedule. Call for an appointment today!

A Toothache The Size Of Jacksonville

Jacksonville Tooth Whitening

Ever get a toothache? Of course you have; who hasn’t? At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we stress the importance of good dental care to all our patients. But Murphy’s Law assures us that if something can go wrong, it will. And that includes getting a toothache.

What Causes a Toothache?

The most common cause of a toothache, by far, is decay. Better known as cavities, decay happens when acids produced by bacteria destroy a tooth’s enamel and the dentin beneath it. Once the dentin is damaged, a tooth becomes very sensitive. That means that a cavity has developed.

If the decay gets too advanced it can affect the tooth at its root. At that point there is a high probability that the tooth will become infected. That will take the toothache to a whole new level of pain, and is a very serious matter. Call us right away.

Other Causes

As common as cavities are, they are not, of course, the only cause of a toothache. Tooth pain may also be caused by gum disease. A more common symptom of gum disease is a dull pain in your mouth, and sensitive, bleeding gums. But tooth pain often accompanies this. Even if there isn’t any tooth pain, if you suspect gum disease you should call us.

Teeth can also get hairline cracks that may not be visible to the naked eye, but will give you pain. The pain could indicate a crack that has made it down to the middle of the tooth, where the root is. It might be the result of some kind of accident, and it won’t necessarily give you pain right away.

What To Do?

For each of these issues, we recommend that you come in to see us as soon as possible. In the short term, though, you might relieve pain with one of the following:

  • A cold pack, such as an icebag or a bag of frozen vegetables
  • An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen
  • A salt water rinse with warm water

But don’t do any of the above until you have scheduled an appointment with us. Mild toothaches are irritating, but it could be something more serious that we’ll want to treat immediately. Don’t take any chances!

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville we offer general and cosmetic dentistry, and offer extended evening and Saturday hours. Schedule your next checkup with us today.

6 Ways Dental Crowns Restore Smiles

cost of dental crowns Jacksonville

Dental crowns have been around a long time, and continue to play an important role in cosmetic dentistry at Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville.

A dental crown, often called a cap, covers the visible part of the tooth. They are used for many common dental issues:

  • An old crown that is damaged or ill-fitting
  • A broken tooth
  • A tooth with extreme decay
  • A tooth that has had a root canal
  • A tooth that is too small or misshapen
  • A tooth that prevents a proper bite

A dental crown serves both structural and aesthetic purposes. It protects a natural tooth from additional decay and damage while permitting normal function. A crown can save a tooth from extraction and the subsequent bone loss that often occurs.

Crowns need daily cleaning and flossing, just like natural teeth. The remaining tooth structure around the gumline could still become decayed, and gum disease is still possible.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, dental crowns are one of our cosmetic dentistry services. Call our office to schedule an appointment today!
