Treatment For Sensitive Teeth

Pumpkin Center cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Millions of Americans experience tooth sensitivity to one degree or another, causing them to avoid certain foods and beverages. If this sounds like you, please talk to us about it at Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville.

People with sensitive teeth are most likely to have problems with temperature. Hot or cold things, like coffee and ice cream, can be really difficult.

There is more than one cause of sensitive teeth, so it’s important to have a proper diagnosis. A common cause is worn tooth enamel. This can expose the dentin just beneath it. Enamel can wear down from using a hard-bristle toothbrush and brushing too aggressively. That’s why we always – repeat, always – recommend using a soft-bristle brush and a light touch.

Other causes:

  • Tooth erosion from highly acidic foods and beverages
  • Tooth decay
  • Receding gums
  • Bruxism (tooth grinding)

The treatment for sensitive teeth may involve filling a cavity or replacing a worn filling. If it’s caused by gum loss, you may need a graft.

Many cases respond very well to sensitive-teeth toothpaste. Take a look in the store: just about every major brand includes a line for sensitive teeth, and they are known to work. Many people see results within a week or two.

The most important thing is to talk to us about it, at Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Call to schedule cleaning and checkup with us today!

Two Hints For When You’re Too Tired To Brush

Jacksonville gentle dentist

Too tired to touch a toothbrush? We’ve all been there. At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we have two fabulously quick ideas to overcome your exhaustion and pick up your toothbrush.

Idea #1 Drag Tongue Along Teeth

As you lie there in bed after a long hard day and realize you forgot to brush, drag your tongue over your teeth a few times. As you do, visualize plaque: that filmy stuff on the teeth and gumline. It’s loaded with the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Then jump up and give your mouth just 2 minutes of gentle, thorough cleaning.

Idea #2 Scrutinize the Food You Eat

Another convenient and uncomplicated approach is to pay attention to what’s going into your mouth throughout the day. The higher the sugar content, the sooner the teeth will need a brushing to avoid harm. Swish with water after coffee, tea or soda if brushing isn’t going to happen soon.

Remember that brushing your teeth is an important part of any daily dental health routine. We recommend brushing twice a day, and with a soft-bristled toothbrush. We strongly recommend flossing, too.

Be sure to get all over your teeth: the front and the sides, inside and out, and the tops. Use a pea-sized blob of fluoridated toothpaste – or more than pea-sized, if you’d like. Too much toothpaste is no big deal, but be sure to use enough!

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. We offer complete general and cosmetic dentistry services. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today.

3 Tips To Make Brushing Count

Pumpkin Center affordable family dentist

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we are big advocates of good dental health, in particular regular brushing and flossing. Since we’re a dental practice that should come as no surprise.

Many of our patients bring questions with them to their checkups, like which toothpaste to use or proper tools and techniques. We think that’s great, since we are all about educating our patients. Some of our answers are as easy as 1-2-3.

1 Soft Bristle Toothbrush

We strongly recommend gentle brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush. It will clean your teeth and massage your gums. There is never a good reason to use hard or medium bristle toothbrushes.

2 Minutes of Brushing and Flossing

Visualize your mouth in four sections and spend a good 30 seconds in each one. Get the chewing surfaces, the inside surfaces, the outside surfaces and gently brush the gums. Be sure to pay attention to the far side of the back tooth. It’s never visible but can collect food and allow tooth decay to begin.

Take two minutes to floss after brushing in the evening. You’ll remove any debris the toothbrush couldn’t get.

3 Times a Day

Brushing after every meal should remain the goal. This is difficult if you aren’t home for the midday meal. To maintain good dental hygiene, brushing is priority one.

There are as many toothpaste choices out there as you have teeth. Choose the flavor you like best, but be sure it has fluoride and carries the American Dental Association seal.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, the dental health of each of our patients is always our top priority. Services include general and cosmetic dentistry. We have extended evening and Saturday hours to fit any schedule. Call for your next checkup today!

A Noteworthy Dental Experience

cost of dental crowns Jacksonville

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we make every checkup a noteworthy experience with our attention to detail, and committment to each patient’s dental health.

Good dental health means having healthy teeth and gums. Maintaining it is something that you have to work at every day. It can be a real balancing act: using the right oral care products, your personal oral care habits, and regular checkups.

Your dental health strategy should include:

  • Daily brushing and flossing. You should brush and floss twice a day. Just before bedtime is especially important, because it cleans out the germs and plaque that build up during the course of the day.
  • Proper brushing. It’s important not only to brush, but to brush properly. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush in a gentle, circular motion along the gum line. Take your time; a minimum of two minutes is recommended. Don’t forget to brush your tongue!
  • Using fluoridated toothpaste. There is a myriad of choices when it comes to toothpaste. Whether you prefer mint flavored or bubble gum, fluoride is the most important consideration. It is your best defense against cavities.
  • Limiting sugary and acidic foods. Acidic fruits, teas, and coffee contributes to enamel erosion. Sugar converts into acid when it’s in your mouth. You don’t have to avoid these foods entirely, but choose carefully and minimize.
  • Seeing us twice a year. You saw this one coming, right? Your daily dental health care habits are essential, but so is the attention and care of a dentist. A professional teeth cleaning alone is worth the trip, but we can also identify issues before they become serious, and treat them.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want every checkup to be a noteworthy experience, and for all our patients to enjoy excellent dental health. Services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today!

Danger Zone! 5 Signs Of Gum Disease

dental payment plans Jacksonville

Here is some essential news from Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville: gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss among adults. There is also evidence that it is connected to heart disease. Fortunately, gum disease is easy to treat if it is found in the early stages.

What warning signs should you be looking for?

  1. Gums that bleed often
  2. Gums that appear tender, swollen, or very red, or gums that have visible pus in between them when they are pushed
  3. Your bite changes or your teeth suddenly don’t seem to fit together
  4. Gums that are loosening from the teeth
  5. A bad taste in the mouth or chronic bad breath

We hope you are not experiencing any of these issues. If you are not removing plaque between your teeth, however, your gums are at risk. Brushing alone is not adequate—make sure you floss daily.

Regular check-ups are another essential weapon in the fight against gum disease.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want all our patients to enjoy healthy teeth and gums. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Have a buy schedule? We offer extended evening and Saturday hours. Call to schedule an appointment today.

A Youthful Smile At Any Age

implant dentures Jacksonville

A wise person once said that everyone wants a long life, but no one wants to get old. Yet it happens. While some challenges that come with aging can’t be avoided, others can. At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we help patients of all ages with their dental health issues.

Many dental problems common among retirees such as missing teeth, gum recession, tooth damage, and yellowed enamel, can be remedied.

Some people think losing their teeth as they age is inevitable. It isn’t. With a proper dental health routine at home and regular cleanings and checkups in our office (just like you’ve always done, we hope) your teeth can last a lifetime.

But the mouth does undergo changes as we age. The nerves in teeth may get smaller, to the point where teeth are not as sensitive to cavities and other issues. That means you may not feel as much tooth pain from a cavity as you once did. Regular checkups become that much more important.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want to see all our patients in for a cleaning and checkup twice a year. Dental health is important, no matter your age! Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today!

Brush Up On Your Cavity Basics

Brush Up On Your Cavity Basics Jacksonville

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we see more cavities in our patients than we would like to. Cavities are far too common in the United States, and there is a tendency to consider them inevitable.

Cavities happen when certain types of bacteria produce acids in the mouth. These acids destroy the enamel of a tooth, as well as its underlying dentin. Holes in the enamel are cavities.

If you’ve got a toothache or new sensitivity in your teeth, or if it hurts when you chew, then you may have a cavity. Call our office so we can get it filled.

Prevent Cavities

To keep your teeth from developing new cavities, we recommend the following three things:

  • Strengthen your teeth’s defenses with fluoride. Most municipal water supplies contain fluoride. Also, make sure it’s in your toothpaste. Not all toothpastes have it.
  • Get dental sealants. We can paint sealants onto your teeth – the back teeth in particular. Sealants act as an added layer of protection for your teeth. You’ll still need to brush!
  • Have regular checkups. Seeing us for a cleaning and checkup every six months means we’ll find any new decay early, and treat it.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville, we want all our patients to have healthy teeth and gums. We offer general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule your next cleaning and checkup today.

Freedom Village Dental Takes Care Of Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

Jacksonville Guide To Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

This message from Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville centers on your dental health.

Plaque is a film that covers teeth – a sticky layer of bacteria. You can remove plaque through daily brushing and flossing. However, if it isn’t removed it can build up and harden into calculus.

Calculus, also known as tartar, is hardened plaque that also accumulates minerals from food and saliva. Regular check-ups and cleanings are necessary to remove tartar as well as hard-to-reach plaque.

Plaque and calculus are not cavities, but they can lead to cavities. A cavity is basically a hole in the tooth caused by decay. Because plaque and calculus contain bacteria, the bacteria release acids which accelerate tooth decay and eventually lead to more cavities.

Having your teeth cleaned and examined twice a year at Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville should be part of your strategy for beating plaque and having a beautiful, healthy smile. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Call our office to schedule your next cleaning and checkup today!

5 Critical Oral Cancer Facts

oral cancer dental checkup Jacksonville

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville NC, we urge people to come in twice a year for a checkup and cleaning.  If you skip checkups because you don’t think you have any decay, perhaps getting an oral cancer screening is a more convincing reason to keep those regular appointment.

Lung and breast cancer have attracted a lot of public attention. There is relatively less awareness of oral cancer, even though it claims almost 10,000 lives in the United States alone, every single year. If you smoke or have tested positive for HPV, you have an increased risk for developing oral cancer.

We work to broaden awareness of oral cancer and the significance of early diagnosis. Courtesy of the CDC, Oral Cancer Foundation, and Johns Hopkins Medicine, here are five critical things to know about oral (mouth) and oropharyngeal (back of mouth and throat) cancers.

  1. About 80% of men and women with oral cancer use some variety of tobacco (cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipes).
  2. 40% of men and women who receive late-stage diagnosis of oral cancer pass away within five years. The survival rate for early stage diagnosis is 90%.
  3. In many cases, it is practically impossible for the individual to detect oral and oropharyngeal cancers because they can produce unobtrusive symptoms or no symptoms at all. Any abnormality in the mouth or throat, even if small and painless, should be examined by a dentist or doctor.
  4. HPV (the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the US) is the most common cause of oropharyngeal cancer. Of the copious strains of HPV, HPV16 is the one most regularly linked to oropharyngeal cancer.
  5. Black males have a higher risk of dying from oral cancer than whites.

At Freedom Village Dental in Jacksonville NC, oral cancer screenings are part of every dental checkup. Our services also include general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today.
